Molly + Paola | Muskoka Adventure Elopement in Ontario
Muskoka has a way of making everything feel a little quieter.
Surrounded by forest, rock, water and seemingly endless stretches of nature, it offers exactly the kind of setting that makes sense for couples who imagine their wedding day feeling intimate, adventurous and deeply connected to the outdoors.
This styled Muskoka adventure elopement with Molly and Paola was created as part of a photography workshop hosted by Muskoka-based photographer Evelyn Barkey. While the elopement itself was styled for the workshop, Molly and Paola are a real couple—and the connection between them very much was not.
An Intimate Elopement in Muskoka
One of the things I love about photographing elopements is how much room there is to strip away expectations.
A wedding doesn't have to involve hundreds of guests, a ballroom, a tightly structured timeline or an entire day built around tradition.
It can be two people somewhere beautiful.
It can mean walking into the forest together, exchanging vows surrounded by trees, climbing across Canadian Shield rock, sharing a meal outdoors or ending the evening beneath the stars.
Muskoka lends itself particularly well to that kind of celebration.
The landscape already provides so much of what you need: towering forests, lakes, rugged rock and the feeling that you've travelled much farther from Toronto than you actually have.
Photographing Molly + Paola
Although the details and setting of this elopement were intentionally styled, what I was most interested in photographing was Molly and Paola themselves.
That's always the part I find most compelling.
Beautiful florals, clothing and landscapes can help create the atmosphere of a photograph, but they aren't what makes me care about it.
People do.
The way two people look at one another. The instinctive way they reach for each other. Laughter between photographs. Movement. Touch. The little expressions that can't really be styled or planned.
Because Molly and Paola are actually a couple, there was an existing familiarity between them that didn't need to be manufactured for the camera.
My job was to notice it.
A Muskoka Elopement Surrounded by Nature
The setting gave us an opportunity to create photographs that moved between intimate portraits and images where Molly and Paola became part of the wider Muskoka landscape.
That's something I especially love about photographing adventure elopements in Ontario.
I want some photographs to bring you close enough to remember an expression or the way your partner looked at you.
But I also want photographs that pull much farther back.
Those images preserve the scale of the place you chose.
The forest around you. The rock beneath your feet. The lake in the distance. The landscape that became part of the memory.
When couples choose to get married somewhere because they genuinely love being outdoors, the environment isn't simply a backdrop for their wedding photographs.
It's part of the experience.
What a Styled Elopement Can Teach Us
Styled workshops offer photographers the opportunity to slow down, experiment and photograph outside the constraints of a real wedding-day timeline.
This particular workshop was created by Evelyn Barkey, a Muskoka-based wedding and destination photographer whose work is rooted in connection and documentary-style imagery.
For me, experiences like this have been valuable because they create space to explore how I want to photograph weddings and elopements—not simply what I want the final images to look like.
I'm continually drawn back to photographs that feel lived-in rather than overly constructed.
Even when the setting has been intentionally created, I'm looking for the things that can't be styled: connection, expression, movement, affection, humour and the ways people naturally exist together.
Those are ultimately the photographs I want to make.
An Elopement That Actually Feels Like You
What I hope couples take away from galleries like this isn't necessarily that their wedding should look exactly like Molly and Paola's.
Quite the opposite.
It's permission to imagine something different.
If a large traditional wedding sounds wonderful to you, have one.
But if the idea of exchanging vows somewhere in the forest, spending the afternoon beside a lake and celebrating with only your partner—or a handful of your favourite people—makes you feel more excited, that can be your wedding too.
An elopement can be intentional rather than secretive.
Adventurous without being elaborate.
Beautiful without being performative.
And small without being any less significant.
LGBTQ+ Elopements in Muskoka + Ontario
As a queer photographer, creating space where LGBTQ+ couples don't have to wonder whether their relationship will be understood, affirmed or represented naturally is deeply important to me.
Your wedding photographs shouldn't require you to fit yourselves into traditional gender roles or someone else's ideas about what a couple—or a wedding—is supposed to look like.
Whether you're planning a full wedding, an intimate celebration or an adventure elopement somewhere in Ontario, I want the photographs to begin with who you actually are together.
Everything else can grow from there.
