There are few wedding venues in Toronto that make you feel quite as removed from the city—while simultaneously giving you one of the best views of it—as the Royal Canadian Yacht Club on Toronto Island.

From the ferry ride across the harbour to the sailboats, waterfront, beautiful grounds and Toronto skyline stretching out across the lake, getting married at the RCYC feels a little like having a destination wedding without actually leaving Toronto.

And this wedding gave us the full Toronto Island experience—including a little rain.

A Wedding at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club

The day began on the Island, with everyone getting ready as rain fell outside.

Wedding-day weather is one of those things you simply can't control, and I've always believed that some of the best photographs happen when couples embrace whatever the day gives them. Rain changes the light, slows things down a little and creates its own atmosphere.

More importantly, it doesn't change the reason everyone is there.

After getting ready, the couple shared a first look—a quiet moment together before the ceremony and a chance to take everything in before the rest of the day unfolded.

From there, we explored the Royal Canadian Yacht Club grounds for portraits.

Wedding Portraits on Toronto Island

One of the best things about photographing a wedding at the RCYC is the sheer variety of scenery within walking distance.

There are docks lined with sailboats, pathways surrounded by greenery, beautiful architecture, open waterfront and, of course, that unmistakable view of the Toronto skyline.

Rather than treating portraits as a completely separate part of the wedding day, I prefer to make them feel like a little time away together.

We walked, talked, laughed, stopped when the light or scenery caught my attention, and made photographs along the way.

Some were more intentionally composed. Others happened entirely in between.

Both matter.

An Outdoor Ceremony Overlooking Toronto

Their outdoor ceremony brought everyone together with Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline as the backdrop.

It is hard to imagine a setting that feels more distinctly Toronto.

The ceremony included personal vows and Jewish wedding traditions, including the breaking of the glass, followed immediately by the kind of joyful celebration that makes ceremony photographs some of my favourites to document.

These are the moments when I become especially grateful for a documentary approach to wedding photography.

There is so much happening at once—the couple's reactions, parents watching, friends laughing or crying, hands reaching for one another, and the eruption of excitement when two people are finally married.

You can't manufacture any of it.

You just have to be paying attention.

Documentary Wedding Photography in Toronto

That's ultimately how I approach every wedding I photograph.

Of course, I'll guide you when you need it. We'll make portraits together, find beautiful light and take advantage of an incredible location like Toronto Island.

But I don't want your memories of your wedding to be mostly memories of posing for photographs.

I want you to experience your day.

While you do that, I'm looking for everything else: the interactions, expressions, movement, emotion and fleeting little moments that tell the fuller story.

At the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, even travelling to and from the venue becomes part of that story.

At the end of the celebration, the ferry ride back across Toronto Harbour gave us one final chapter—and another incredible view of the city skyline from the water.

It's one of the things that makes an RCYC wedding so unique.

You begin with the city behind you, spend your wedding day on an island surrounded by water, and eventually make your way back toward the skyline.

A wedding day that feels completely removed from Toronto and unmistakably Toronto at exactly the same time.
