Sarah + Alex | Algonquin Highlands Wedding in Ontario

Some weddings I photograph as a photographer.

This one I photographed as a photographer, a best friend, and someone who loves the people in these photographs very, very much.

Sarah has been my best friend since we were five years old. Calling her my “childhood best friend” almost doesn't feel sufficient after this many years. We grew up together. She has been beside me through so many versions of my life that she feels much more like a sister than a friend.

And then there is Alex, who I absolutely adore.

One of the greatest things about watching someone you love find their person is getting to love the person they chose, too. Alex didn't simply become Sarah's partner; over the years, he became someone incredibly important to me in his own right.

So when Sarah and Alex got married in the Algonquin Highlands, this wasn't simply another wedding I had the privilege of documenting.

It was part of my own story, too.

A Wedding in the Algonquin Highlands

Sarah and Alex's wedding took place surrounded by the beautiful, rugged landscape of the Algonquin Highlands in Ontario.

It was relaxed, personal and wonderfully unpretentious—the kind of wedding where the celebration felt less about putting on a perfect event and much more about bringing together the people who mattered to them.

That suited Sarah and Alex perfectly.

The natural surroundings gave the day the feeling of a weekend away in cottage country: trees, open space and that unmistakable northern Ontario landscape creating the backdrop for everything that unfolded.

It wasn't a wedding that needed an enormous amount of embellishment.

The people were the point.

Photographing My Best Friend's Wedding

There is something surreal about looking through a camera at someone you've known for almost your entire life and realizing you're photographing their wedding day.

I've known Sarah since we were little kids.

I knew her long before either of us could have imagined who we would become, the lives we would build, or the people we would eventually love.

And suddenly there she was, standing beside Alex, surrounded by their families and friends, beginning another chapter of her life—and I had the privilege of preserving it.

Photographing people I love always carries an additional layer of meaning for me.

I'm paying attention as a photographer to light, composition, movement and all the little moments happening around me.

But I'm also emotionally inside the story.

I know these people.

I know what certain relationships mean. I recognize expressions and interactions differently because I have a history with the people in front of my camera.

And with Sarah, that history goes back almost as far as I can remember.

Sarah + Alex

One of the things I love most about these photographs is that they don't only remind me of their wedding.

They remind me of them.

The way Sarah and Alex laugh together. The ease between them. Their affection for one another. The people who surround them. The feeling of everyone gathering in one place because these two people had chosen each other.

Those are always the moments I'm looking for when I photograph a wedding, but on this day they carried a different kind of weight.

I wasn't discovering Sarah and Alex's relationship through my camera.

I already knew it.

I already knew how much Sarah loved Alex.

And I already knew how grateful I was that this was the person my best friend had found.

A Laid-Back Ontario Country Wedding

Sarah and Alex's wedding is also a perfect example of why I love intimate, relaxed weddings in Ontario.

A beautiful wedding doesn't require everything to be highly polished or perfectly choreographed.

Some of the photographs that matter most happen between the things you planned.

Someone laughing across a table.

A hug that lasts a little longer than expected.

Kids doing their own thing.

Friends gathered together.

People dancing badly and enthusiastically.

Someone you love becoming emotional when they thought they wouldn't.

These are the things that eventually become the story of a wedding day.

And they're exactly the things I want to preserve.

When Photographs Become Family History

I've photographed a lot of weddings over the years, and one of the things I've come to understand is that wedding photographs inevitably change in value.

When they're first delivered, they're photographs of something that just happened.

Ten years later, they're something else.

People change. Families grow. Relationships evolve. Children become adults. We lose people we love. And photographs quietly accumulate histories we couldn't have anticipated when we made them.

That's especially tangible for me when I look at Sarah and Alex's wedding photographs.

Sarah and I already have decades of photographs documenting our lives together—from childhood onward.

These images now belong somewhere along that same timeline.

They document the day my oldest friend married someone I love dearly, surrounded by so many people who have intersected with our lives along the way.

And someday, these photographs will be old photographs too.

That's one of the reasons I care so deeply about what I do.

Sarah + Alex, I Love You

It's impossible for me to write about this wedding with any kind of professional distance, so I'm not going to try.

Sarah, you have been part of my life since we were five years old. You are family to me. You have witnessed more versions of me than almost anyone, and having the opportunity to witness—and photograph—this version of you was incredibly special.

And Alex: I couldn't have imagined a better person for someone I love this much to build a life with. I love you independently of loving Sarah, and I'm incredibly grateful that you became part of our family.

Getting to photograph your wedding wasn't simply an honour as a photographer.

It was an honour as your friend.

I love you both.

And I'm so grateful these photographs exist.

Looking for a wedding photographer in the Algonquin Highlands or elsewhere in Ontario? I photograph weddings with a candid, documentary-inspired approach centred on people, relationships and all the unscripted moments that make a celebration yours.

If you're planning a relaxed wedding where being present with the people you love matters more than performing for the camera, I'd love to hear about it.
