Palm trees, ocean air, bare feet in the sand, and an entire trip shared with the people you love most—Krysta and Mike’s wedding in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic was as much an experience as it was a wedding day.

Destination weddings have a completely different rhythm from weddings at home. Instead of everyone arriving for a single afternoon or evening, couples and their guests get to spend days together—settling into vacation mode, sharing meals, swimming, exploring, and building anticipation before the wedding even begins.

By the time the wedding day arrives, everyone is already part of the experience.

A Destination Wedding in Punta Cana

For Krysta and Mike, the tropical surroundings of Punta Cana created an incredible backdrop for their celebration.

The combination of lush greenery, palms, bright Caribbean light and the beach gave us so much variety throughout the day, while still allowing the photography to feel relaxed and connected to what was actually happening.

That balance is always important to me.

A destination this beautiful naturally lends itself to incredible portraits, but I don't want a couple to spend their wedding day disappearing for hours to create them.

The wedding is the reason we're there.

So we make time for portraits, take advantage of the scenery and beautiful light, and then get you back to actually celebrating with everyone who travelled all that way to be with you.

A Beach Wedding in the Dominican Republic

Few settings change the feeling of a wedding quite like being beside the ocean.

There's movement everywhere—the wind, the water, clothing and hair—and I love allowing all of that to become part of the photographs rather than trying to control it.

The result feels alive.

Throughout Krysta and Mike's day, I moved between documenting the larger moments and watching for everything happening around them: the excitement while getting ready, interactions between family and friends, the ceremony, embraces, laughter and all of those fleeting expressions that disappear almost as quickly as they happen.

Those unscripted moments are ultimately what make every wedding different.

Documentary Destination Wedding Photography

My approach doesn't fundamentally change when I travel for a wedding.

Whether I'm photographing a wedding in Toronto, somewhere else in Ontario, or beside the Caribbean Sea, I'm looking for the same thing: photographs that feel like the people and the experience in front of me.

I'll guide you when you need it. We'll make beautiful portraits. We'll absolutely take advantage of the fact that you've brought me somewhere with palm trees and an ocean.

But you don't need to perform your wedding for my camera.

I'd much rather photograph you laughing with your friends, being pulled onto the dance floor, wiping away tears, holding onto each other during the ceremony, or walking barefoot along the beach than spend the entire day manufacturing photographs that don't feel like you.

The beautiful setting is part of the story.

The people are the story.

Why I Love Destination Weddings

One of my favourite parts of destination wedding photography is that the experience extends beyond the traditional boundaries of a wedding day.

You've chosen somewhere meaningful or exciting, asked your favourite people to travel with you, and created an opportunity to celebrate together in a completely different environment.

It can also give couples permission to let go of some of the expectations surrounding traditional weddings at home.

Wear what you want. Get married beside the ocean. Have cocktails outside. Take your shoes off. Let the wind mess up your hair. Dance until everyone is exhausted.

Your wedding doesn't need to look like anyone else's.
